Due process

The right to fair legal steps, like a hearing, before the government can punish you or take something away.

In more detail

Due process is in the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments: the government can't take away your life, liberty or property without fair rules and a fair hearing. It's why people accused of crimes get notice, a lawyer and a chance to respond.

In a sentence

"The judge ruled that skipping the hearing violated due process."
