Subsidy

Money the government gives to support a business, product or activity, to keep it going or make it cheaper.

In more detail

Subsidies can take the form of cash, tax breaks or cheap loans, and they exist for farming, energy, housing and more. People argue over which ones are worth it: one person's smart investment is another's handout.

In a sentence

"A subsidy for electric cars lowers the price buyers pay at the dealership."
