An official order to do something, such as a rule requiring a vaccine or a type of insurance.
The word has two common meanings: a rule that requires something, like a vaccine mandate, or the authority voters give a winner to carry out their promises. Winners often claim a mandate; opponents often dispute how big it is.
"After a wide win, the governor said voters had given her a mandate."
